The ingredients are fine large format film cameras.
A location and knowing how to use the light.
A tripod, film and metering skills as well as composition skills. A basic knowledge of shooting transparencies. 645, 6 x 7, 4 x 5 or 8 x 10.
About 25 years of practice.
A very patient wife who lives the spots you spend days at
while you fuddle about with this and that.
After a while, the photos just start to happen.
Though you may like the results, others may feel the efforts yielded only marginal, almost 1st grade results.
Pride in tact, you go back out and try to do better next time.
The learning curve takes a lifetime. Many places I've been the professors of filmography are stacked up on the ridges and creeks, honing their skills and sharing all they know with each other. No one knows it all in this game.
Modern digital can almost equal medium format, but not really, I guess from what I know fine film still exceeds the tonal range of digital full frame cameras.
But, I profess to know nothing. Only what I prefer.
It's a big world out there, surely someone somewhere will prove me wrong.
