To begin with, I will state up front that I carry a handgun (legally) outside my home. I consider being equipped to stand (effectively) between my family and whatever may threaten them to be not only a right, but one of the fundamental responsibilities of adulthood.
There are many reasons why I chose this specific rifle. First, and foremost, it is for the protection of my loved ones. Both as a Marine (Iraq), and watching the events of the last few decades (L.A. Riots, New Orleans in the hours after Katrina), I am keenly aware that the world is not exclusively populated by kind upstanding people of good will, and that there are circumstances where the police simply WILL NOT be there to protect my family. Under such dire circumstances, the capacity, reliability, and power of this instrument are precisely what I need. This fits the bill.
Beyond this essential function, I also shoot competitions with it in IDPA matches, featuring realistic scenarios that not only are fun, but better prepare me to use my rifle effectively and safely under fire. I also hunt with it, and enjoy just plinking.
Finally, I will share a story with you. Not a couple of days after I purchased my rifle, my fiance and I were awoken to the sound of shattering glass. I jumped up, grabbed my AK, chambered a round, and rounded the corner to meet the threat. It tuned out to be a lamp, knocked over by an overly-inquisitive tabby. I cleared my weapon and returned to the bedroom to put it away before grabbing a broom. There I saw my wife to be, and the look of relief on her face. She is now my wife, and I vowed to protect her and the children we will have one day. I'm both fortunate, and proud to own an AK-47 pattern rifle.
