(Ann Arbor, Michigan) – After the discovery of two emaciated dogs in Sterling Heights, Michigan, one of which that has since died, animal advocates are reeling from the possibility that an 18-year-old woman charged with two counts of animal neglect may not see any time behind bars. According to investigators in this case, the neglect charges carry up to one year and 93 days of jail time each, although they were originally looking for felony charges that carry up to four years in jail. On November 18, Detroit Bully Corps rescued two dogs belonging to Lisa Marie Precourt of Sterling Heights after receiving a tip from a supporter about the poor condition of Precourt’s dogs, now known as Angel and Shiner. Precourt’s friend had posted a request on Facebook to find a new home for Angel because she said her friend had to move. After the supporter and his wife met with Precourt to take ownership the dog, they saw that her condition was poor and immediately contacted DBC for help. DBC told them to take her to the nearest emergency vet. At that time the couple did not have the funds to treat Angel, so DBC then told them they would send two volunteers to pick her up. At that time the couple also informed DBC that Precourt owned a second dog, now known as Shiner, who was also emaciated. DBC initiated negotiations to have Precourt sign over both dogs to them. DBC immediately took Angel to Emergency Veterinary Hospital of Ann Arbor for treatment. Sadly, just four days after beginning treatment, Angel died due to the severity of her condition. During her necropsy, it was discovered that Angel suffered from a perforated esophagus caused by stomach acid that ate away at the esophagus lining due to starvation. Although her former owner had dog food in the house, the necropsy showed Angel had no abdominal fat. A prior surgery showed that she only had some plastic and cloth-like material in her stomach.
