I will always associate the first President Bush with the Willie Horton ads released by him and his presidential campaign. Those ads played to the worst racial fears that white Americans have about black American males. It wasn't good for the Country and it disparaged a whole group of people just to win a campaign for political office. I do remember that he was asked why he ran these ads at a news conference just after he won the presidential election of 1988. President Bush replied: I had to win this election. (Or words to that effect.) So I do give him credit for admitting that it wasn't a good way to do it, but he wanted to win.
I do think that he was a decent President and much better/smarter than President Bush the son.
