Kind-hearted seniors, some in their 90s, joined forces in the kitchen at Scarborough Terrace Assisted Living to bake homemade treats for a bake sale to benefit Project G.R.A.C.E. At the sale, the assisted living community raised $200, and thanks to one of the Scarborough Terrace employee’s smart Black Friday shopping, they bought nearly $600 worth of children’s clothing, hats, gloves, boots and jackets to donate to Project G.R.A.C.E. The residents proudly presented the items to Project G.R.A.C.E.’s executive director, Stephanie Cox, at a special ceremony this morning.
“I was definitely in the giving spirit when I headed out to Kohl’s at 10:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving. I was 14th in line, and the store opened at midnight. I knew this was the best approach to stretch our fundraising dollars,” said Karen Smith, business manager, Scarborough Terrace Assisted Living. “It was a lot of fun to do the shopping, and it made me feel good to cash in on deals for such a worthy cause.”
Project G.R.A.C.E. (Granting Resources and Assistance Through Community Effort) is a non-profit that provides groceries, clothing, and school supplies to children and families in Scarborough that are in need. Project G.R.A.C.E. relies on the donors and volunteers.
“Project G.R.A.C.E. is very gratified to have the steadfast support of the residents of Scarborough Terrace, particularly during the holidays,” said Stephanie Cox, executive director of Project G.R.A.C.E. “Even here in Scarborough, many families struggle to put food on the table, keep warm, and provide the basics for their children. Fortunately, there are many who care about their neighbors, and are willing to give time, money, and effort to help.”
Scarborough Terrace has held a bake sale to raise money for Project G.R.A.C.E. for the past three years. The residents also donate food for the organization’s backpack program.
“It touches my heart to see how much our residents enjoy helping the community,” said Elizabeth Simonds, marketing manager of Scarborough Terrace Assisted Living. “We find it very rewarding, and we feel it is extremely important to do our part to assist families in need.”
Scarborough Terrace is still in the giving spirit. The community is also collecting pet food from the public through the middle of December. Scarborough Terrace residents will donate the pet food to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland. The public can drop off pet food at the community, 600 Commerce Drive in Scarborough.
