My name is Byron Thomas and America; I must truly share my DC internship experience with y'all. God blessed me with an incredible internship for Republican Senator Tim Scott. I was so excited to be working in Washington DC. But trouble came when I tried to find a way to bring people together, and it truly changed my life. I sent this email out, wanting to say the Pledge of Allegiance with other staffers and interns:
“Good morning
My name is Byron Thomas and I'm from the extremely beautiful state of South Carolina. I intern for Republican Senator Tim Scott. I've had the pleasure of coming into different offices to meet the staff and interns from different states. Yes, we are all different and are working on different agendas but at the end of the day, we're all citizens of the greatest country on earth, known as the United States of America. Now I've only been here for 8 days but I can tell that something is wrong, (in my opinion). We have American flags in front of every room, but I’ve never seen anyone take the time to proudly say the Pledge of Allegiance. Truly ask yourself, when was the last time you put your hand on your heart and said the Pledge of Allegiance. Now, I’m not attacking anybody because it’s your freedom and right to not say it but I’m assuming everyone that’s working up here loves this awesome country. Are we that busy that we can’t take a minute to show some pride and respect for our country? I say it every morning before I walk in because America’s always on my mind. I truly care about this country and I refuse to let this country fall. I know saying the pledge isn’t going to straighten out this economy we are in, but I believe it’s the little things that will take us far in life. We’re living in a truly blessed country and our generation has a great opportunity to be the greatest generation this country has ever had. I have a ton of faith in our generation because we will get America back on track! We all have to work together, so we can keep that American Dream alive for future generations. Now, I would love to say the pledge with the different offices before 9am (because that’s when I start work). All I want is for our generation to show that we’re united and that we’re going to stand together. We’ll always be One Nation, Under God. I hope you’ll see my words as kind and respectful because I’m truly not attacking anybody. I just truly care about this country and I want to work with everybody. Overwhelm People with Kindness and May God Bless the United States of America
P.S. Please share my message to your staff and interns or other offices that I didn’t reach, if you would like. Also if any events are happening, please let me know I would love to come.”
I just wanted to say the pledge with different people, that’s all. Didn't matter what political party someone was in, I just wanted to feel connected and try to bring people together. I respect people’s right to not wanting to say the Pledge of Allegiance. So someone sent my email to the press and it all went downhill from there. I never meant to shame the staff or the senator. It truly broke my heart when I got news that someone sent it to the press and I got into trouble. It shell shocked me and mentally crushed me. I have a good heart and all I wanted to do was unit people, but someone didn’t see that. I didn’t talk to people like I did before I sent the email out and I walked the halls with my head down. I cried a lot because it was extremely tough and I’m not a crier. People would see me saying the pledge in the hall and they would give me a funny look. The devil truly got into my mind and made me think things that I never think of and it was tough fighting the pain and hurt. I would think sometimes, “God why did you send me up here and you know how I am? You know I always try to bring people together. Why did you let this happen to me because I didn’t want this?” Thank God for the staff because they told me to pick my head up, learn from my mistake and this experience, and move forward. And I slowly but surely did. Their encouragement meant a lot because I felt like I had extremely embarrassed them and the entire office. God put words of wisdom upon me and I’m definitely going to be a better person from his experience. I’ll never lose my love for this country and I’m going to work on myself, so when the time is right and God’s ready for me to hopefully lead, I’ll be ready. But I’m going to wait on God and follow his direction. Overwhelm People with Kindness and May God Continue to Bless the United States of America.
P.S. This will be my last video for some time because I need to personally work on some things to better myself for my future. Y’all stay blessed
