Many children dream of growing up and walking on the
Moon. Making their first steps on the surface and
repeating Neil Armstrong's famous words, "That's one
small step for man, a giant leap for mankind".
While those dreams were and are not mine, I can
understand those adventurer's dreams of going off out
to the great unknown. I was just surprised to see how
many people signed up for the mission to Mars, over
one hundred thousand people. This mission is a one
way trip to another world, with no return possible. The
challenge's of daily life living on Mars with be
extraordinarily difficult for any person. Will Mars One,
which is the private company responsible for the
mission which starts in 2022 with four astro-colonist's.
Will Mars One provide these astronaut-colonist with
enough food to live for 50 or 100 years?. The
temperatures can reach as low as minus 195 degrees
in the winter, Will they account for the freezing
temperatures?. Will they be pinning their food
supply solely on growing it indoors or will Mars One
have a backup plan?. What happens if someone gets
sick, they have a heart attack or stroke, will Mars One
have a doctor going on the Mission?. And the last
question that I have is, what if someone just becomes
mentally unhinged, they want their life back, they want to
see their family, they miss Earth?. How will the colonist
deal with the Psychological and emotional effects of a
colonist with these feelings. Yes, emotion's are a
powerful force and I wonder if some people signed up
for this mission based on emotion, the thrill of being
able to live out a dream. It's nine or ten years before
this mission, you may not have a friend in this world, a
girlfriend or a wife, your parents may have passed on.
But, just because you may not have a friend
or family at the moment, does not mean that you will not
have some of those things in the future, on this planet.
These applicants have many years before they begin a
new chapter in the history of the human race. Many
things can go wrong and many things can go right, I just
hope they go in to this mission with their eyes wide
open. If this mission is a go, I will wish those chosen
few adventurer's, many happy years to come.
