I took this photo outside of the U.N. General Assembly in 2012. Mohammad Morsi had recently taken office as the first democratically elected president of Egypt since the ouster of Hosni Mubarak, and there was widespread support for Morsi and optimism for Egypt's future, as exemplified by this picture. Exactly one year later, in 2013, Morsi has been ousted from power in a military coup and is currently incarcerated pending criminal prosecution; his political party, the Muslim Brotherhood, has been completely banned in Egypt by decree of the country's high court, and Hosni Mubarak has been released from prison. How so much has changed in one short year. I'm sure if I run into this gentleman again outside the U.N. today, he will be carrying a different sign with a very different message.
