Today is the day for nursing mothers to unite!
School officials in the city of Poway--a bedroom community north of San Diego--have disrespected the breast-feeders and the ire of the milking mothers has been raised!
The Facebook event page, https://www.facebook.com/events/1417343541812622/ invites all who support their cause to rally with them for a nurse-in at the Poway School District offices on Wednesday morning, Sept. 25.
According to the event organizer, "In April 2013, Rachel Rainbolt was told that she could not breastfeed her toddler at her older son's school presentation. The district’s official position was that if she insisted on breastfeeding at the presentation, her older son would not be permitted to attend the group presentation class, and would instead have to give his presentations to the teacher in private, depriving him of the experience of presenting in front of a group.
After months of attempting to ameliorate this situation through the CA Dept of Fair Employment and Housing, the official verdict was released a few days ago and both the state department and the school district did not find these accusations to be considered discriminatory."
So here we are today--protecting the rights of a mother to breastfeed at her children's school. The goal of this nurse-in is to to ask the school district to explicitly create, and publicly state, a district policy in accordance with CA law; breastfeeding is permitted on school property, without condition.
All local breastfeeding mothers and breastfeeding supporters (with or without a nursling) are called to stand with us in solidarity for this important cause.
The nurse-in will take place at the Poway Unified School District Offices, located at 15250 Avenue of Sciences in Poway from 7:30am-10am.
Unite in Support of Nursing Moms! Do Not Tread on Us!
