At just three weeks shy of 94 years old, my grandpa gave his final salute earlier this year during a Memorial Day service to honor the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. The moment was captivating and humbling. (See attached picture.)
My grandpa, Dale Johnson, served in the U.S. Army during both WWII and the Korean Conflict. (Additional information about the years he served and his roles in both of the wars can be provided if requested.)
The military was always near and dear to his heart. He was recently honored by his hometown's (Edgar, Nebraska) American Legion for 66 years of service. During 40 of those years, Grandpa took pride in tracking and marking the graves of servicemen with flags for Memorial Day. He also enjoyed serving his community by delivering Meals on Wheels until he turned 90 years old.
Tomorrow (9/26/2013) we will lay to rest our grandpa, great-grandpa, dad, husband, friend and American hero. The family would be honored to be able to give him the final salute farewell that he deserves for his years of service in a featured story on Salute to Troops.
For additional information, please feel free to contact my mom, (Grandpa's daughter) Sheila Leffler, at 307-421-9247. The family would be more than happy to share more details about Grandpa's services in the military if needed.
