I would like to salute my hero, Robert Hawkins II, who is in the navy stationed in Washington State. Even though he is my hero, I have never met him.
In March of 2011 I was diagnosed with AML and ALL (two forms of leukemia, blood cancer). Even though only 19 years old at the time, Robert had signed up to be a bone marrow donor and in November of 2011, I was told that in a database of 9 million we had a "match". On November 8, 2011 I received the transplant at MD Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston, Texas, and the rest is history.
After one year, I was allowed to contact him, and we have since communicated on Facebook and telephone/text. Two of my sons have purchased airline tickets for Robert and his new wife Stephanie, to come to Houston the end of December to make my dreams come true of meeting him. I do believe in divine intervention -- I lost my youngest son, Robert, age 19 in 2003. How could it be anything else - Robert Hawkins II was 19 when he donated his marrow. This is a copy of the letter that I wrote to him the first time before I knew any details about him other than he was 19 years old.
"I don't know if you are short, or tall, or thin or round. If you speak with an accent if you are a military man, if you ride the waves, or ride a skateboard. But to me you are an Angel, A Prince of Peace, the most holiest of men Heavenly Father sent from Heaven just for me at this critical time. A young man way beyond your years that was willing to make such an honorable sacrifice - to give me the Gift of Life. I lost my youngest son when he was 19 and I believe that through you, I am getting inspiration to reacquaint myself once again with the young and brave. I hope that someday we can meet and I can express my love and appreciation to you and your family for your most generous donation".
Although I don't have too much information about him now, I wanted to share my story with you.
God Bless all of you at CNN for this opportunity. I love the segment that you do honoring those who serve, and everyday that I see it just reminds me that I must thank him!
