This weekend, I attended the restaurant show here in Chongqing at Guanyinqiao shopping plaza. (See my other iReports this week for more photos) The abundance of food styles and variety were, as they always are when dining out in China, oftentimes surprising and unusually interesting. The chefs were on hand, the cameras were flashing and everyone loved the "eye candy" views. Culture, art and food collided in a way that only the Chinese can do it. The crowds weren't able to sample the food, although one chef did give us a taste of a lovely red bean and sweet rice amuse- bouche with walnut meats. Discounts were offered while reservation agents took hundreds, maybe thousands, of numbers for future seatings. I love it when a table is inviting, and these certainly were. I think I'll go out and give thanks for my great privilege to be in another far away country again for the Thanksgiving holiday and just forego the turkey and the cooking this year for something exclusively Chinese with new friends.
