[South Korea 2012 Presidential Election Scandals - Update News]
The Jeon-ju diocese chapter of the Catholic Priests' Association for Justice (CPAJ) said a special Mass on Nov 22, dennouncing 2012 presidential election scandals and requesting Ms. Park, Geun-hye to resign from the presidency. Rev. Park, Chang-shin, an elder activist priest, gave homily on causes of tension on the peninsular and irregularity of the election which justifies them to ask Ms. Park to step down.
On Nov 24, Archobishop Andrew Yeum, bishop of Seoul Archdiocese, said a Mass held for celebrating the end of the Year of Faith. At the end of his sermon, he made a reservation on the activities of CPAJ, giving his own justification. He said Catholic Church prohibited priests to involve political activities and chances are that they might bring about division in the church.
On Nov 25, Rev. Ham, Se-wung, one of the leading elder priests of CPAJ, criticised the archbishop's comment. He is afraid that the archbiop's saying is nothing but an attempt to find fault with them in a way, and anachronistic and not based on Gospel, and distorting Church Dogma as well.
Rev. Ham interpretes Church's teaching as follows: Catholic Church does not allow priests to be political figures such as President or national assembly men. But it's a noblesse oblige for them do prophetic roles by casting moral and ethical comments on problematic political issues and situations.
Rev. Ham added that the teaching of Catholic Church on the affairs is clearly spelled out in the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World (Gaudium et Spes), a document from the second Vatican Council, 1965.
