Mayor Rob Ford Rocker

It was just a few of weeks ago when the entire world was introduced to Toronto's mayor through a spectacular spectacle of drug related drama, truths, lies, denials, cursing and flip-flops worthy of a sad, yet comedic, made-for-TV movie.

Rob Ford - although respected for his fiscal restraint of city coffers - revealed his ravenous inability to balance his personal issues/demons with the spotlight and pressures that come with being the leader of Canada's largest and most financially important city.

From admissions of crack use (after denying such actions mere months before) and suspected cavorting with drug dealers and gangsters – to running over fellow councillors, swearing in front of school children, driving drunk and making outlandish comments (especially the shocking vagina-related one) in front of international media, even everyday Torontonians have to laugh at the absurdity of it all.

We know we live in a great city that is well managed, is one of the safest places in the world to live, is home to a myriad of multinational corporations and has one of the highest densities ethnic diversification in the world. Toronto is just awesome and the negative coverage of one man does not diminish the pride we have in our city – just as Anthony Weiner’s revealing underwear pics did nothing to diminish the greatness of NYC.

So many of our American friends have gone through far worse with mayors from coast to coast. New York, Detroit, Providence, Washington and San Diego have had some "unique" characters to say the least. So giving our American friends a reprieve by taking shots at Ford is all good. Call it an early Christmas present from Ontario.

Frankly, American media would be crazy not to take their shots at Toronto’s current political state. I believe this because Rob Ford is a rocking chair! He is a man who constantly moves forward to apologize and then tilts backwards to recant by doing something really outrageous…only to move forward with yet another apology. The repetition is comedic gold. Late night talk shows can't get enough and as I mentioned before, many of us here just laugh along.

Yes, he does need help and there is an air of sympathy and pity for Ford, but when you keep on choosing to make yourself the fool and refuse to listen to friends and colleagues, you can’t complain about receiving coverage you don’t like. You don’t feed the lion and then complain when it like the food!

However, regardless of what Ford does going forward, the city of Toronto has moved on (stripped him of his powers), the world has moved on (BBC and Al Jazeera correspondents have gone home) and if Ford still wants the attention, he will still get it simply because we need a comedic political fix now and then and we know he’ll provide it on his terms.

So, like many of my fellow homegrown artists, I was inspired by this unique man and unique situation. This human rocking-chair that can able provide comfort to his fans (and still command a 24% approval rate), but can be polarizing and threatening to others. So I made Rob Ford into a chair that sits comfortable in my living room and is the go-to conversation piece for guests.

My way of commemorating Toronto's time in the spotlight while sitting my crack in a Ford!
