A while back Avid Technology sold its Pinnacle Studio consumer software to Corel Corp. Now Corel markets it as Pinnacle Studio 16, Pinnacle Studio 16 Plus, Pinnacle Studio 16 Ultimate and Pinnacle Studio for iPad. This change adds a tried-and-true product line to Corel's excellent lineup of software products, some of which I've previously reviewed.
Pinnacle Studio 16 Ultimate software does things that would have cost you $thousands in years past. It can create professional-quality movies, Web series and DVDs, including stereoscopic 3D movies for 3D HDTVs and Sony PS3. It works with 3D camcorders like the GoPro, and there are built-in 3D effects. Hey, it evens comes with 3D glasses!
For starters, you can import your video clips/photos from about any source or digital device, whether it is hard drives, flash drives, DVDs or Blu-ray discs, analog video tapes, SD cards, digital cameras and cloud storage sites. You can copy media files to the Library, or link to them from your hard drive or cloud. [But you wouldn't link to a flash drive, as you'd probably remove it.] Pinnacle Studio includes 50GB of free space on Box.com, if you register with Box online.
Once you have your files in the Library, you are able to organize and correct them before starting your editing. You can sort, categorize and rate your media files. There are handy tools to enhance or repair video clips, photos, and audio you've imported. And a green check mark shows the clips that have been used in the timeline. Pinnacle has scene detection; long clips are automatically cut into individual scenes for easier searching.
There's Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound mixing The audio tools also include a composer called ScoreFitter. It easily creates music for your projects, using a category (such as Folk or Electronica), a song, and a version of that song. You select one and a length (such as 30 seconds), and it's added to your editing timeline. It's very cool, and fun to use.
Pinnacle Studio 16 Ultimate comes with 2000+ 2D/3D effects, transitions, titles and other content, including Red Giant Filmmaker’s and Motion Graphics Toolkit plug-ins. These provide wonderful visual effects (VFX) to your productions. These are especially useful with music videos and customized “sizzle reels” for directors and actors. For quick and easy edits, you can use Pinnacle's SmartSlide and SmartMovie for automatic results.
Once you've done your editing, add professional-looking motion titles with full control over text, font, color, size, position, and rotation. You can export your project to all popular video formats, such as AVI, MP4, WMV, MOV, etc., to DVDs/Blu-rays, and upload to YouTube, Facebook, etc.
Pinnacle Studio comes with a “Getting Started” tutorial DVD with excellent lessons covering all aspects of the software. I advise viewing all the lessons, as I did, if you want to get up-to-speed soon. There's a lot to learn, so also read the manual; it's informative.
Suggested retail for Pinnacle Studio 16 is $59.95, Pinnacle Studio 16 Plus is $99.95, and Pinnacle Studio 16 Ultimate runs only $129.95 (US and Canada). Users of Pinnacle Studio 9 or higher, Avid Studio and Pinnacle/Avid Liquid 6 or higher can upgrade. Upgrade to Pinnacle Studio 16 Plus for $69.95, while the upgrade to Pinnacle Studio 16 Ultimate is $89.95.
Pinnacle Studio 16, Pinnacle Studio 16 Plus and Pinnacle Studio 16 Ultimate are available in 17 languages. Purchase them as an electronic download from www.pinnaclesys.com, or from Corel's resellers.
Pinnacle Studio 16 for the iPad is available from the App Store in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Dutch, and Simplified Chinese. For more information, surf to www.pinnaclesys.com/studioapp.
