THE EMBATTLED UNIUYO VICE CHANCELLOR’S PROFILE AND THE USE-AND-DUMP SYNDROME

In the words of Kurt Vonnegut, Jr, “we are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be”. These pertinent words provoke salient questions, like what happens when human psyches are wounded? Is there a “still small voice” deep within each of us that cries out when it is being abused and damaged? Could the voice be permanently silenced? Is it true that we create mask to protect who we really are? What happens when we remove the masks? The Vice Chancellor of University of Uyo and Religious Charlatan, Evang. Prof. (Mrs.) Comfort M. Ekpo, could ponder on these questions.
The Vice Chancellor adopts a poor-me manipulative tactic to achieve her desperate desires, using any available “instrument” that respond to her skills. Though bereft of corporate or administrative acumen, she is an expert in creeping through the “iron gates” of great minds, and dumping same with ignominy. Most horrifying, is the pair of a perennial and serial failed administrator, Prof. Okon Asuquo Ansa, whose involvement in directing affairs of any establishment cast a spell on it and renders it moribund and defunct. Oil Palm Company, University of Uyo Farms, Use Offot, ADC Airlines, etc. could attest to this.
The embattled VC who was 3rd in the Dr. Nuhu’s led Council interview panel where she emerged as the Vice Chancellor, University of Uyo, against the best candidate/professor from University of Benin, through a tactical engagement of a poor-me manipulative formula. Incidentally, Prof. Akaneren I. Essien fell a victim and the available “instrument”, in conjunction with Prof. Effiong Johnson, who displayed his artistry in oratory, to persuade “Uniuyo Concerned Governing Council Members” to appoint Prof. (Mrs.) Comfort M. Ekpo as the next Vice Chancellor to Prof. Akaneren I. Essien.
Today, these eminent scholars and administrators must have learnt from the words of George Bernard Shaw, “if you begin by sacrificing yourself to those you love, you will end by hating those to whom you have sacrificed yourself”, as they were “used” and “dumped”. The “blessed” professor of Education Technology, Prof. (Mrs.) Comfort M. Ekpo, made attempts to implicate the former Vice Chancellor, Prof. Akaneren I. Essien, when she declared before House of Representative Committee on Public Accounts that N28.1m fraud was inherited from her predecessor.
On Prof. Effiong Johnson, she promised to appoint him as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Admin) if she would succeed in securing the VC’s office. But alas! She is on her exit without redeeming the promise to the professor that passionately sacrificed his skills for her.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Enobong Ibanga, is not left out in her spree. The physicist did not know that the VC was interested in him because of his usefulness only when she wants to increase school fees. The Dean being a master in the arts of deception and trickery, with effective flagging of his showy eyebrows and subtle smiles could coax the Students Union Government’s representatives, into accepting his terms.
Today, because the Dean has secured another appointment as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) in Akwa Ibom State University, the VC and her Management Team seek for his pound of flesh. They grouped to lambast the Dean of Student Affairs alone on the inferno of June 12, 2013, through sponsored Press Release in the newspapers “that the Dean of Student Affairs had failed the Students’ Community” and that “he should be prosecuted”. This is to re-direct the public/authorities’ attention from the VC and her Management Team. No! No!! No!!!
The Vice Chancellor with her Management Team has failed to realize that there are people who could think. If one of her Team members has failed, by extension, the entire Management Team has failed. Hence, should all vacate their offices and be prosecuted.
The story of the defunct NASU executives is no more a news. The Vice Chancellor “used” the NASU Chairman, Mr. Monday Esuh, to achieve her desire without considering that the enterprising Chairman would equally “use” her. She spent Nigerians’ children hard earned money recklessly (yet she cries for Take-off Grant) to sponsor Mr. Monday Esuh’s wedding ceremony to “buy” his mind and cowed his popularity with his followers to cripple agitations. The non-academic chairman being conscious of his betrayal of his supporters and loss of their confidence in him cornered the academic professor into a deal christened “Trade by Barter”.
The negotiation resulted in physical cash of N350,000,000.00, exchanging for betrayal of supporters and loss of fame. The VC endorsed, without looking across her shoulders, a bank Guarantor’s Form for the celebrated NASU Chairman. Before issues could be analyzed and interpreted to the poor-me manipulator, she recalled, though too late, the popular slogan “mugu fall guyman wack”
In Scene III of this episode, how would she pay up the difference tagged “fraud”? This would not be realized without fraudulent practices in the system. How? She would not pay the workers what is due to them. For instance, the just documented workers called Caretakers were in the University’s payroll to NUC long ago. The former Governing Council approved 80% Hazzard Allowance arrears payment to workers, but 50% was paid. The allowance has not even been harmonized. Where are the differences? N28,000,000.00 could not be accounted for on the just completed Post Graduate School building at Main Campus, etc. Where has such monies gone to?
These would be coined out with fictitious sub-heads. And when this would boomerang, one would recall the incident of years ago at Teaching Hospital, Uyo where the husband to the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Mefin Ekpo, was hand-cuffed out of office on N77,000,000.00 fraud.
The infamous Uniuyo crises on June 12, 2013 presaged her waterloo, following professional display of a security guru and Chief Security Officer, Lt. Col. O. E. Nyong (rtd), that resisted all forms of manipulation and intimidation to conceal facts in favour of Uniuyo Management. She applied her usual poor-me manipulation and failed. She adopted the take-charge manipulation, where she later issued suspension letter in attempt to demoralize the infantry soldier into submission. These ill-conceived moves served as morale boosters to the security tactician, as he refused to kowtow and compromise his principles guided by truth and honour.
She engaged one third-class graduate, former Uniuyo security officer and mercenary, Mr. Israel Ideh, who runs a treacherous voluntary security services to her, to play “dirty jobs” on the suspended Chief Security Officer, with a promise to reward him with official engagement in the University of Uyo on successful completion of the assignments against the CSO. And Mr. Israel Ideh, in his usual guile nature and battered by the scourge of applicantitis rushed in for the screen-smoke offer. This is another “use-and-dump” victim.
The reason being that the spiteful Vice Chancellor is in possession of Mr. Israel Ideh’s volunteered written report on all the Uniuyo-base 2010 VC aspirants, including the embattled Vice Chancellor, Prof. (Mrs.) Comfort M. Ekpo, who were to appear before Dr. Nuhu’s led interview panel on the appointment of the Vice Chancellor. In that report, Mr. Israel Ideh lambasted the office usurper, Evang. Prof. (Mrs.) Comfort M. Ekpo and described her as a misfit for the office. He also made defamatory remarks against all other contestants, except his own candidate (name with-held). Mr. Ideh may have forgotten, but the vindictive poor-me manipulator knows when to bid him a farewell.
Currently, the embattled VC has her toughest hurdle, so far, in her career to scale through. But she seems to exhaust her most reliable “instruments”. She finds it extremely difficult to breakthrough a Social Activist, Political Scientist, Zero-Tolerant, Pro-Chancellor of University of Uyo and Chairman of Uniuyo Governing Council, Prof. Kimse Okoko and The Church of Christ’s clergy, a member of University of Uyo Governing Council and Chairman of Uniuyo Investigation Panel on Students’ Disturbances, Gen. (Dr.) John W. Gbor. The embattled VC even made a hideous attempt to bribe the investigating panel through Rev. (Mrs.) Grace Ekanem, but he Council member held tenaciously to her Christian faith and rebuked the devil to flee in disgrace. This was on a Sunday preceding the panel seating on Uniuyo Students’ Disturbances.
One outstanding observation is that the more she tries to manipulate the no-nonsense Uniport Professor, the more error she gets involved. On Tuesday, July 23, 2013, she cooked rice and assembled students under the guise of Uniuyo Stake Holders meeting to discuss ways forward after the worst incident in the annals of history in Nigerian Universities, where a Vice Chancellor’s office was completely razed. Little did the poor students know that the poor-me manipulator’s ultimate goal was to have official platform to construct “Uniuyo Concerned Students Group” for the purpose of gathering the acclaimed resolutions and demands to present before the Governing Council and the relevant authorities that all is well in University of Uyo, and that the students have absolved her with her Management Team, except the martyr, Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Enobong Ibanga, of June 12, 2013 panorama.

This is a very cheap, infantile and desperate approach, not minding the enormous risks and implications of using University logo ingloriously. Well done our fictitious “Uniuyo Concerned Students Group” in your financial buoyancy to pay for a 2-page publication in The Guardian, and be ready for more levies! Your Vote of Confidence on your Vice Chancellor will cause woes to poor families.
In sum, according to John Gardner, “The ultimate goal of the educational system is to shift to the individual the burden of pursuing his own education”. Therefore, our VC and the Management Team ride on and execute your beliefs! We are still observing and guided by the words of John F. Kennedy “The highest duty of the writer … is to remain true to himself and let the chips fall where they may”.
