The Independent Pharmacy Cooperative (IPC) and Absorption Pharmaceuticals (AP) recently reached an agreement where the AP’s product for treating premature ejaculation, Promescent, will be distributed to over 4,500 pharmacies in the United States.
The IPC is considered the largest purchasing organization for independent pharmacies, making this deal significant for men who suffer from premature ejaculation.
According to Medscape, premature ejaculation (PE) is the most common sexual disorder in men younger than 40, with “30-70% males in the United States affected to some degree at one time or another.”
Promescent is advertised as a topical spray that is applied on-demand rather than with a daily dose. AP also prides itself as having the only FDA-approved product for PE treatment.
Topical sprays and creams contain one or more anesthetic agents which desensitize the penis to sexual stimulation, enabling the man to delay ejaculation . They are applied at some period before intercourse, depending on the product.
Besides topical cream, antidepressants are often prescribed because of the side effect, which delays orgasm. This is not the approved method of treatment but has been known to have effect.
Other treatments include certain sexual therapies, which would be recommended by your doctor, as well as possible behavioral therapy if the problem were deemed mental rather than physical. Stress and anxiety have also been linked to performance issues.
