Heart Healthy Beef starts in Kansas

It started with a commercial in 2007. Dad wondered, "If a bowl of oatmeal could lower my cholesterol, could it also lower the cholesterol of my cattle?" The answer? Yes. He started feeding our cattle whole oats again in 2012 and began selling the beef in May of 2013. The flavor of the meat keeps my customers coming back, but the health benefits are what is exciting! Kansas State University submitted our ground beef to Midwest Labs in Omaha, NE for a cholesterol test. We compared our results to those listed on the USDA website for nutrient comparison. Our 85/15 ground beef was lower than ground chicken, turkey, pork, bison, grass-fed beef, and grain (corn) fed beef. We also compared the cholesterol level to other meats that we had in the freezer...each time finding our level to be lower than the other options. But the good news doesn't stop there. Omega-3's and 6's are important too. The importance lies in the ration between the two. Research shows that a healthy diet would have a ratio around 4:1. The closer you can get to 1:1 the better. Our Oatie Beef has a ratio of 3.17:1. We do not give our cattle hormones or unnecessary antibiotics. There is nothing fancy about what we do....we simple feed them whole oats, alfalfa, and straw. The cattle remain happy and healthy and the meat reflects this to our consumers. Imagine the possibilities for the beef industry! Doctors would no longer be telling their patients to stop eating red meat. Instead, they would be saying it is the best option. We have found a way to produce flavorful and healthy beef right here in rural Kansas. We are a family farm committed to providing healthy beef to our consumers while maintaining the well-being of our cattle. Oatie Beef is the new heart healthy option.
