In fact Todd Starnes’ reaction actually fuelled the fire of many hateful and bigoted responses that are unbecoming to any reporter, anchor person or anybody working for any news media group. “The liberal Miss America judges won’t say this-but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values;” Todd Starnes tweeted as Nina Davuluri received her crown.
Years ago any female having even a small tattoo would have been denied even a chance at the title of Miss America. Anybody having seen Miss Kansas has to agree that tattoo is not small. This shows that times and rules are changing for the betterment of the pageant and the participants, but I seriously doubt that the tattoo played a big role in the decision. There are many more important things that are weighed into the decision of the winners of Miss America.
Essentially Miss America represents America where ever she goes. Miss America is sort of an unofficial ambassador for America. America being considered “the melting pot” of nations in many parts of the world it should not be surprising to anybody that Americans consist of other than just white skinned people. Being that America consists of much more than guns and military it is important for Miss America to represent that more quality to other nations around the world; even when in America.
Being Miss America is a lot of fun, but it is a great deal of work, restraint, rules and restrictions too. Miss America’s life is no longer just her own and she must be diligent at all times. Miss America’s attitude is a reflection of the American people. Whatever Miss America says will be gauged by others as how America is and what America is all about.
Americans need to stop thinking in terms of skin tones and think in terms of human beings. News people like Todd Starnes gives the media a really bad reputation and his distasteful tweet should earn him a stern reprimand by his own news station. Todd Starnes should also give a very public apology to Miss America and to the judges of the Miss America pageant as well.
