Rwandan Genocide

The best moment for me, as it appears in the photo, was visiting the Nyamata memorial in Rwanda February this year. April of 1994, thousands of Hutus and some Tutsis took a refuge in this little church believing they were safe. The Interahamwe however used grenades to gain entry into the church, and massacred thousands of people with machetes, clubs and various kinds of weapons. The crypts at the memorial houses bludgeoned skulls and remains of over 40,000 victims slaughtered inside the church and the surrounding area. The genocide was caused by deep-rooted hatred that has existed between the Hutus and Tutsis for centuries.

The experience has left a tremendous impact on me. I have come to further appreciate the importance of every human life and why we should challenge abuses of all kinds. To ensure this never happens in my home country Ghana, I’ve exposed the photos I took in the crypts to as many people as I can. It serves as a reminder to the consequences of tribalism and hatred among people.

I filed the experience in one of iReport’s assignments in April 2013. Here: http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-950136
